TO GOD BE THE GLORY

Arguably, one of the best hymns for worship is this song.

 It's amazing how hymns move over time and space. William Doane's Songs of Devotion contained the phrase "To God be the glory" in 1870, which suggests that it was composed at least five years earlier than the generally accepted date of 1875.

The hymn was most likely found in Doane's collection, and Ira Sankey included it in the first printing of his Sacred Songs and Solos (1875). The hymn's popularity was boosted by Dwight Moody and Ira Sankey's revivals in Great Britain in the late 19th century. Additionally, it was included in a few British hymnals, such as the Methodist Hymn Book from 1933.

Cliff Barrows did not first introduce this hymn to American churches until the 1954 Billy Graham Crusade in Nashville.

Lyrics

To God Be The Glory, Great Things He Hath Done - The Jubilate Singers

...

To God be the glory great things he hath done

so loved he the world that he have us his son

 who yielded his life an atonement for sin

 opened the life gate that all may go in

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the earth hear his voice

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the people rejoice

o come to the father through Jesus the son

and give him the glory great things he hath done

o perfect redemption

the purchase of blood

to every believer the promise of God

the vilest offender who truly believes

that moment from Jesus

a pardon receives

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the earth hear his voice

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the people rejoice

o come to the father through Jesus the son

and give him the glory great things he hath done

Great things he hath taught us

great things he hath done

and great our rejoicing through Jesus the son

but purer and higher and greater will

our wonder our transport

when Jesus we see

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the earth hear his voice

praise the Lord

praise the Lord

let the people rejoice

o come to the father through Jesus the son
